UMCA Annual Business Meeting Sets The Tone For 2018
UMCA members met on Thursday, January 18th at the Grand America for the 2018 UMCA Annual Business Meeting. Contractor members gathered from 2:30PM – 4:00PM to discuss the most pressing issues facing Utah Contractors. UMCA President, Jason Bleak, called the meeting to order and began with a President’s Report outlining the progress made with a training program run by outside expert Richard Barnes for UMCA & UA Local 140 Leadership. President Bleak expressed his optimism in working with the new leadership of the Local 140 and recognized the effort that will need to be made to identify and constructively work toward fixing the issues that both Labor and Management face. Following the President’s Report, Ryan Jorgensen presented the Treasure’s Report. Ryan briefly reviewed the budget, finances, trust, and investments and the rights of members. The contractor only portion of the meeting was rounded out with a presentation of committee reports for the Utah Career Center, Utah Pipe Trades Health & Welfare/ Pension, Labor Relations/Contract Administration, Drug Free Workplace, Legislative Committee, and the MCAA Report. At the conclusion of the meeting Brett Christiansen of the Nominating Committee recognized and thanked outgoing Board Member Derrick Sander, A&B Mechanical Contractors, for his service and dedication to the organization and his contributions to the trade. He was presented with a plaque to honor his service and time spent on the UMCA Board of Directors. Norm Cole of Commercial Mechanical was nominated and welcomed as a new member to the UMCA Board of Directors.
Following the Contractor meeting Associate and Affiliate members joined together to hear from Utah House Representative, Robert Spendlove. In addition to representing District 49, Robert is also the Economic and Public Policy Officer at Zions Bank. Robert engaged members with an insightful look at economic growth in several sectors and the factors that affect change across the board. Robert drew on social factors that affect the labor force and the dramatic changes throughout the years. It was an enlightening glance at the 2018-2019 economic outlook that looked closely at trends that will continue to effect the labor and workforce nationwide. The meeting concluded with a reception and dinner. The Annual Meeting helps the UMCA leadership better understand the needs of members and gives members an open forum to ask questions and contribute to the strategic planning and mission of the UMCA.
